Choosing and planning
UK engineering: choose the course, not just the name
FREE TCO GUIDESChoosing engineering in the UK starts with a more useful question than “Which university is best?” Ask how soon you want to specialise, and what you want to spend your week learning.

Compare the first two years
Cambridge’s Engineering BA/MEng course gives students a broad foundation in the first two years, with specialisation from year three. Its listed options include mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and energy, sustainability and the environment.
Imperial’s four-year Mechanical Engineering MEng takes a different starting point. Its first-year core includes Fluid Mechanics 1, Mechatronics 1, Stress Analysis 1, and Design and Manufacture 1. That gives you concrete material to compare, beyond the university name.
Imagine this example
Suppose you built a small solar-powered fan. You enjoyed testing blade shapes, but the circuit failures interested you just as much. A broad engineering beginning could help you explore both interests before choosing a direction. Alternatively, if you kept returning to vibration, materials and manufacturing tolerances, a mechanical course deserves a closer look.
This is a hypothetical example, not a successful applicant’s story. The useful step is to describe which problem held your attention, what you tried, and what you still want to understand. Compare that question with actual modules.
Check the exact course variant
Accreditation deserves careful reading. Imperial lists its Mechanical Engineering MEng as accredited by IMechE, but explicitly identifies its two year-abroad variants as not accredited. Cambridge says accreditation depends on the papers you take. Do not assume every course carrying the same department name has identical recognition.
Also separate educational requirements from professional registration: an accredited integrated master’s can meet the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer registration; the degree itself is not a promise of that professional title.
