Writing in your own voice

US college essays and activities: what should you write about?

FREE TCO GUIDES

Your application does not need a manufactured dramatic story. It needs enough detail for a reader to recognise how you notice things, make decisions and contribute to the people around you.

Choose a moment you can explain

Imagine you help your younger sibling with mathematics. At first, you repeat the method your teacher used. When that fails, you draw a shopping example and discover that your sibling understands the calculation but not the wording. This is an illustrative scenario, not a student success story.

The useful material is your adjustment: what you noticed, why you changed approach and what remained difficult. Small moments can reveal intellectual curiosity and patience when the details are honest.

Let activities show the actual work

Common App’s activities guidance includes responsibilities such as family commitments, jobs and hobbies alongside clubs and formal activities. You do not need to dismiss meaningful work because it lacks a certificate.

Describe what you actually did and the time involved. For the tutoring example, distinguish regular support from a single afternoon. If you organised a group, explain your own role rather than taking credit for everyone’s contribution. Estimate hours carefully and keep the description consistent with the rest of your application.

Give the essay a different job

Common App’s essay guidance encourages reflection on experiences and what they reveal about you. Your essay can explore the meaning of one episode while the activities section records its practical scope.

For the illustrative tutoring experience, ask what changed in your understanding of learning. Perhaps you became less certain that a quick answer proves real comprehension. That is a thought worth developing in your own words; there is no need to claim that it transformed education.

Ask a trusted reader where your explanation becomes unclear. Keep the final wording and decisions yours, and check each institution’s current rules on assistance. A polished paragraph should still sound like a person who could comfortably discuss the experience.
