Costs and funding
Funding a US master’s: what is actually confirmed?
FREE TCO GUIDESAn admission offer and a funded place are separate outcomes. Give every scholarship, assistantship and personal contribution a clear status before deciding what you can afford.

Read the actual funding promise
Cornell’s Graduate School says financial assistance for research master’s and professional programmes is limited and varies by programme. That is a useful reminder: a university’s funded doctoral model does not establish what it will provide to a master’s student. Start with your exact degree, then read the written award terms rather than assuming support will appear after arrival.
Turn an encouraging email into questions
Imagine a fictional applicant who receives an offer and an email saying teaching opportunities may be available. She is excited, understandably. But the email does not say she has a job, how many hours it covers, or whether tuition will be reduced.
Her next questions should be practical: is a separate application required, who selects candidates, when are decisions made, and what would the appointment cover? If an award is confirmed, check its duration, renewal conditions, payment timing and any remaining fees. A tuition reduction and a living stipend solve different parts of the budget. Put them in separate rows.
Work backwards from each deadline
Keep admission, scholarships, assistantships and deposits on the same calendar, but give each its own deadline and status. Some opportunities require separate materials or earlier action; confirm that from the relevant programme rather than assuming the admission form covers everything.
Prepare the affordable version of your plan using only money you can actually rely on. Then make a second version showing what would change if pending funding arrived. Record the gap in plain numbers. If you would need to borrow, inspect the lender’s current terms independently and consider the repayment burden without assuming a particular future salary. You deserve a decision based on the whole commitment, not the excitement of the offer alone.
