Choosing and planning
The right evidence depends on the application.
FREE TCO GUIDESYour application route changes the question you need to answer. An undergraduate, transfer or master’s application should not be the same story with a different university name.
Put the detail to work
Consider a hypothetical student interested in urban transport. As an undergraduate applicant, they might explain how a school project led them to investigate congestion and why they need mathematical preparation. The evidence should match their experience and prompt, without pretending they already have a professional research agenda.
Now imagine that student seeking a transfer. They need to explain why moving would serve a specific educational purpose. Perhaps they explored the available options at their current institution and found that the course sequence cannot support a developing interest. Describe what they tried, what remains missing and what they hope to pursue. Avoid turning the explanation into a complaint about the institution.
Stanford’s transfer application currently asks for reasons for transferring and the objectives applicants hope to achieve. That question is specific to this route. Other universities may ask different questions or impose different eligibility rules, so do not treat one transfer essay as universally reusable.
For a master’s application, the same interest may require a different level of evidence: relevant coursework, a dissertation, methods used in a project or learning from employment. Explain what prepared you for the programme and what further training you need. A taught course and a research course may ask for different documents.
Cambridge’s postgraduate guidance directs applicants to the individual course page for supporting requirements. It says most research courses request a research proposal, while requirements such as written work and GRE scores depend on the course. Check before preparing documents or tests your programme does not request.
Build your plan from the official requirements for your route and entry year. Record eligibility, documents, deadlines and any unanswered questions. Your Studio can organise those tasks, but it cannot replace the university’s current instructions or decide that a requirement does not apply to you.
