Help your referee remember the work.
FREE TCO GUIDESA recommendation gives the reader another informed view of you. Choose an appropriate person and provide context, leaving the judgment and writing to them.
Put the detail to work
Imagine a hypothetical choice between a famous speaker you met once and a teacher who watched you struggle with a project, seek feedback and improve it. The teacher may be able to describe your learning in much greater detail. Start with what the recommender actually knows, alongside the institution’s rules about whom you may nominate.
MIT, for example, requires two teacher recommendations and recommends a mathematics or science teacher plus a humanities, social science or language teacher. It says the exact combination is not a hard requirement and values teachers who know you as a student and a person. That is MIT’s guidance, not a rule to copy across every application.
Ask before entering someone’s details. Give them the real deadline, submission instructions and enough time to decide. A short request can explain what you are applying for and why you thought of them. Let them decline if they cannot write thoughtfully.
Then offer factual reminders. In our hypothetical project, you might mention the first unsuccessful analysis, the office-hours conversation and the revised method. Include the course name, dates and your actual role. A brief note can revive a specific memory; a page of adjectives about your own brilliance cannot.
Do not draft praise for someone to sign or ask them to make claims they did not observe. If they request a CV or factual summary, provide it accurately. Keep confidential letters out of Studio uploads and respect the submission process required by the university.
Track the request separately from its receipt. An invitation being sent does not prove a letter arrived. MIT’s guidance says recommendation materials should come directly from recommenders. Follow each institution’s own process, check the portal when available, and send a courteous reminder if something remains outstanding.
