How to ask for a university recommendation or reference

FREE TCO GUIDES

A good reference starts with a suitable person and a clear, considerate request. Help the referee remember your work and understand the task without trying to write their judgement for them.

Choose someone who knows the work

Common App explains that colleges set their own recommendation requirements and that teachers and counselors contribute different perspectives. Oxford’s graduate guidance normally looks for academic referees who taught or supervised you, while course rules may permit professional references.

Read those requirements first. A famous contact is not automatically a useful referee. Someone who watched you develop an argument, revise a design or handle feedback may have much more to say.

Make your request concrete

Consider an illustrative student asking a lecturer who supervised a transport project. The student reminds them of the project, explains the intended master’s subject and asks whether they have time to provide a helpful reference by the deadline.

That gives the lecturer a real choice. Sending an unexplained portal invitation first can create confusion, especially if the person is unavailable. Ask early and allow them to decline. If they agree, confirm the email address and explain whether separate applications will generate several invitations.

A short brief could include the project title, one marked piece of work, your current CV and the programmes’ submission instructions. Remind them of facts they observed, such as how you revised an analysis after feedback. Do not supply flattering claims for them to adopt.

Follow through without adding pressure

Keep a tracker with agreement received, invitation sent, deadline and submission status. Check the portal before sending a reminder.

If the deadline approaches, make the reminder brief and useful: identify the application, restate the date and ask whether anything else is needed. If the referee can no longer help, consult the application instructions about replacing them.

Thank them after submission and share your eventual news.
